The road across Bealach na Ba to Applecross is often closed in winter due to bad weather, quite often for many weeks. The alternative by road is a twenty eight mile detour along the coast road around the north of the peninsular.

Today I start at the viewpoint at Carn Glas summit on the Bealach na Ba and follow the road down to Applecross. Although it was a bright day the weather was cold and windy. You get some great views across Applecross Bay to the Isle of Skye.
As I enter Applecross I pass a campsite which looks quite nice. Applecross itself has an inn with some good food and also along the front outside the inn is a café selling food and drinks from an American silver airstream trailer, There is also a self service petrol pump and an outdoor activity centre providing guides for kayaking, coasteering and climbing.
The actual village store and post office for Applecross is over a mile south from the inn going towards Camustiel. I continue on passing the Rock Piller at Camusterrach towards Toscaig. This is the southernmost tip of the Applecross peninsular, it has a harbour there and some lobster pots lying around but no boats. The jetty or pier seems to have fallen into disrepair.
I turned up at the Youth Hostel, Hartford House on a Sunday afternoon, without booking. The hostel had been booked out to a wedding party for the weekend. Most of the guests had left and the hostel was still closed until Monday until they had cleaned up. Thankfully, they took pity on me and made a room up for me which I was very grateful for.
