Day 144 : Acharacle – Lochailort

Acharacle is on the main loop road from Fort William that links the Ardnamurchan and Moidart areas. It has a general store, a bakers and a fish & chip shop. I leave Acharacle across the bridge of the River Shiel which links the sea to the lock

Walk Date :                25th Sep 2015
Mileage :                     18.50 miles                   Total Mileage :          2,321.19 miles
Accommodation :      Bunkhouse, Ariundle, Strontian

Loch Shiel is about 11.5 miles long with Acharacle at the southern end and Glenfinnian at the northern end, This is where the West Highland Railway passes over the viaduct that became famous in the Harry Potter films. If you go there you might be lucky to see the Jacobite Steam Train.

I pass a sign for Dorlin or Tioram Castle which sits on a rock in Loch Moidart. Access to the castle is by a tidal causeway, but the castle itself is closed as some of the walls have fallen down. Further on I pass another sign for the “Silver Walk” which follows the loch part of the way before climbing over the hills to the Castle.

I continue on through Ardmolich and cross the bridge over the River Moidart at Kinlockmoidart. I come to a stone cairn commemorating the “Seven Men of Moidart” who were the companions of Bonnie Prince Charlie when he arrived at the loch.

The Moidart War Memorial has been laid at the top of the hill by the road on the way to Glenuig. From here you get some fine views back of the loch and beyond. As I approach Glenuig I see a sign for the smokehouse and inn. I could already smell the smoke and it was making me hungry.

I continue along the coast with spectacular coastal views and pass Roshven Hydro Power Station on the way to Lochailort.
